Abra Shirley

Hello! My name is Abra (pronounced with a long “A” at the beginning, like Abraham). I am a fine artist and illustrator. The decision to draw for my career came quite naturally because it is something I love and have always done. The ability to communicate with words is not one of my greatest gifts, I speak more effectively through images. Sharing my work with you is something I choose to do, with the intention of adding to your life in some small way—whether that is through education, inspiration, or just simply give you enjoyment, as it does me. The narrative sequences I created for this show are each consistent with my artistic style yet, represent some of the variety and contrast I enjoy. In the first set of illustrations, I challenged myself to portray the story of “Noah’s Ark” in the absence of words. This narrative is told through a black and white lens until a climactic use of color demonstrates the power of God’s promise to mankind following the destruction. I enjoyed working on this project because it included several of my favorites — animals, details, and bible stories. The second, are illustrations of Jack Prelutsky’s children’s poem, “My Sister is a Sissy.” For this sequence, I elected to portray more simplified illustrations with an enhanced color palette in order to reflect the playfulness of the poem and a more specific audience. If you are interested, there is more information and artwork found on my website that I would love to share. Thank you for taking a look. I appreciate the time you have given.
