Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps, based in San Antonio, Texas, is one of twenty-two American world class corps in Drum Corps International, a performing arts league that functions similarly to professional sports. Members, ages twenty-one or under, come from all over the world and pay thousands of dollars to participate in a lengthy and arduous process of auditioning, training, and competition. In 2019, The Crossmen had twenty-six shows all over the country. They traveled in charter busses nearly every night, rolling up to a high school to set up sleeping mats on gym floors before the next fifteen-hour day of rehearsals. I was on tour with Crossmen for the 2019 season. I documented their rehearsals, their labor, their day-to-day lives. But as I dove deeper, I realized that I was also able to discover and excavate my own intimate relationships within this community. Ultimately the project tells the story of my involvement within the marching band and the emotional connection I have built with the activity.
